A trek to Mystery skeleton Lake of Uttarakhand, Roopkund Lake is a must-do for an avid trekker! This water body perched in the laps of the snow clad Mt.Trishul situated in the Himalayas at an altitude of 16,499ft. This lake is famous due to more than five hundred skeletons of humans that are found at the edge of the lake.

The route along this trek is a fascinating journey of discovering the most pristine of Himalayan oak and blooming rhododendron forests. Generally known as a moderate trek, the trek trails through mountainous rivers, enthralling ridges, lush forests and scenic meadows. Located at the base of two Himalayan peaks, Trishul and Nandghungti, it attracts people who have an adventurous side to life. There are religious festivals that take place in autumn, held at the alpine meadow of Bedni Bugyal, where the nearby villages participate.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Kathgodam to Lohajung

Around 6-8 hours of drive to the base camp.

 

Day 2 - Trek from Lohajung to Didna Village

Lohajung Pass, Bedni Ganga River                                                                   

This day you will begin your trek to Roopkund Glacier Lake. Taking the Lord Curzon trail from Lohajung and follow a steady uphill trek through Lohajung Pass, which will eventually lead to the downhill trail of Bedni River. Cross the bridge over the river and traverse through oak and bamboo forests of oak and bamboo arrive at Didna Village.

With this, you arrive at the first base camp, overnight stay in tents.

 

Day 3 - Trek from Didna Village to Ali Bugyal

Steep Trek, Oak & Bamboo Forests, Garhwal Himalayas

After a nourishing breakfast, leave the base camp and begin with a slight ascend through oak forests and long stands of bamboo. Admire the beautiful views of the Garhwal Himalayan ranges as they come in your journey. Arrive at one of the best camping grounds with divine views on this side of the Himalayas as you enter open alpine grazing meadows of Ali Bugyal; overnight stay in the camp.

 

Day 4 - Trek from Ali Bugyal to Ghora Lotani

Easy Trek, Panoramic Himalayas, Magpie

The fourth-day trek will be an easier one and will take you to the new side of the ridge; an ardent eye can spot a Himalayan Magpie on the way. After a few hours of trekking, arrive at Ghora Lotani, which is one of the most fascinating of destinations along the Roopkund trek, on these mountains; overnight camping in Ghora Lotani.

 

Day 5 - Trek from Ghora Lotani to Bhagwabasa

High Altitude Trekking, Barren Campsite, Icy Winds

Following the breakfast, the trek will start. On this day, as you proceed forward, you will gain height from 12,500-14,500ft, which will lead to some challenges because of high altitudes, zigzag passes and icy cold winds. Passing through Kalu Vinayak, you will finally reach Bhagwabasa (4,100m) campsite in a secluded and barren landscape; overnight stay in camps.

 

Day 6 - Trek from Bhagwabasa – Roopkund Lake – Bedni Bugyal (via Bhagwabasa)

Roopkund Lake, Human Skeletons, Mt. Trishul, Gangotri Ranges

After days of continuous trekking, this day you will be at a fascinating point of the trek. Starting with a morning breakfast,  you will trek to the mysterious Roopkund Lake. This uninhabited landmark in the laps of Mt. Trishul has overwhelmed many travellers with its innumerable stories and sheer beauty. From here, trek for another half hour to reach Junar Gali, the highest point on this trail, and trek back to the base camp at Bedni Bugyal via Bhagwabasa. Witness the captivating Garhwal Himalayas in full glory extending up to Gangotri; overnight stay in Bedni Bugyal.

 

Day 7 - Trek from Bedni Bugyal to Lohajung (via Wan)

Trekking, Rhododenron forests, alpine meadows

As you start the return trek, bid goodbye to memorable experience as you had while capturing a glimpse of Mt. Trishul from Bedni Bugyal on a clear day from Kanakdhar, en route Wan. Follow the steep descents, gradual climbs through forests are packed with blooming Rhododendrons. After a steep descent for the Neel Ganga, Arrive at Wan. From here, you’ll be driven to Lohajung. Spend the night at Lohagunj.

 

Day 8 - Departure 

Lohajung Exploration, Roopkund Trekking ends here

This will be the last day of the trek. Spend the day looking around Lohajung. Say goodbye to the Himalayas!!!

Advisory

  • Climatic conditions in the high altitudes vary from the plains; take adequate time to get acclimatised to high altitudes

  • Do not consume alcohol or any other intoxicants during the trek

  • Avoid trekking during the nights

  • Before undertaking the trek, consult a physician

  • Carry basic medications and a first-aid kit during the trek

  • The trek takes place through eco-friendly zone; do not encourage littering the local sites or campsites

  • This package has two variations. The one with transport includes a pick and drop from Kathgodam to Lohajung and then back to Kathgodam, Lohajung is the start point of the trek. The one without transport trekker has to reach Lohajung on his own.

 

CANCELLATION POLICY

  • If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 25% of booking value will be charged as cancellation fees.

  • If cancellations are made 15-30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of booking value will be charged as cancellation fees.

  • If cancellations are made within 0-15 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of booking value will be charged as cancellation fees.

  • In the case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, certain activities may be cancelled and in such cases, the operator will try his best to provide an alternate feasible activity. However, no refund will be provided for the same.
