Itinerary

Day 1 -  NewJalpaiguri railway station to Yuksom (6 hrs drive)

Yuksom Village

Though the initial drive to Yuksom from  NJP Railway Station would take about 6hrs, the remarkable milky white peaks and the breath-taking scenic views would keep you gazing in awe and loose track of time. NJP is considered to be the gateway for the North East region, being the hub station connecting to all major cities and towns. The closest airplane terminal is Bagdogra Airport which is around 16km from NJP.

Day 2 - Yuksom(5,800 ft) to Sachen (7,250 ft ) 4 hrs

Valley of Rathong, Sachen

This is the principal day of the trek. After strolling over open fields we enter the alluring valley of Rathong.  The vibrant old Oak, Conifer and Bamboo forests and the lush greeneries and fragile orchids that line the trek trail will leave you mesmerised.

We arrive at Sachen, our halt for tonight. Sachen is situated at around 7200 Ft.  above sea level. We will enjoy our meals at one of the many log huts here and retire for the day.

Day 3 - Sachen (7,200 ft) – Tshoka (9,650 ft). (3 ½ – 4 hrs)

Sachen, Tshoka, river Perk

The Goechala Trek from Sachen to Tshoka includes very extensive altitude gain. We keep strolling until we reach the bridge over the river Perk. Prayer flags at a distance are an indication of the start of the Goechala trail.

We take a halt at Bakhim and rest at the wooden trekker's hut for a while. We trek towards Tshokha from Bakhim for about an hour.Trekkers cottage at a distance denotes the landing of Tshokha.

Day 4 - Tshoka(9,650 ft)- Dzongri(12,980 ft) via Phedang(12,050 ft). (5-6 hrs)

Phedang, Dzongri

On the fourth day of Goechala Trek, we have a lofty climb. You will be encompassed by Rhododendron woodlands all around. After about 30 minutes into the trek, the trail changes to a well laid out way with wooden logs. In some time we arrive atPhedang.

At 12,000 feet, Phedang is a flawless place to stop for lunch. We then proceed for Dzongri. Through this leg of the trek you will climb more than 13,000 feet, so cerebral pains are normal because of the thin air. In around 6 - 7hrs we arrive atDzongri. Overnight remain at Dzongri.

Day 5 - Dzongri(12,980 ft) – Thangsing ( 12,930 ft) and back. (4-5 hrs)

View of the magnificent Kanchenjunga, Dzongri top

Today we begin an hour long ascend to the Dzongri top. This is the most astounding and highest point on the Goechala Trek from where we will get an 180 degreepanaromic view of the Kanchejungarange. We can achieve the top in the nick of time for the dawn if we start early by 4 AM. Experience how the beams of the sun interact with this grand mountain range. After getting a charge out of this fabulous view we backtrack to Dzongri.

Day 6 - Thangsing – Lamuney(13,692 ft) via Kockchurang(12,096 ft).2 hrs

Lamuney

Today is the shortest day of the Goechala trek. We would take around 2 hrs to reachLamuney. The trek goes through the snow-capped mountains covered with rhododendrons and juniper. Lamuney is an open and breezy territory. We will camp overnight at Lamuney.

Day 7 - Day 7: Lamuney(13,693 ft) – Goechala(16,207 ft) and back to Kockchurang.10-12 hrs

Talung Glacier, with Goechala,  Kockchurang

The trek to the thin climes of the Goecha La is an unrivalled perspective of the gigantic East Ridge of Kangchenjunga high over the Talung Glacier. In addition, treat yourselves with the astonishing views of high edges and peaks that enclose the upper Prek Valley.

Goechala is the extent till where we are permitted to go.Towards the north, there is a vast mountainous region yet to be explored where we are not permitted to enter. The trail heads along the most distant side of the lake and through moraine before crossing  a sandy segment near  the Onglakhing Glacier

The trek through the sidelong moraine is tiring – all the more if there has been a current snowfall. The Goecha La is set apart with vacillating, bright prayer banners, surrounding the pinnacle of Kangchenjunga.

Lead the same trek tailback toLamuney and trek further to reach the destination-Kockchurang. As per your likings, opt to stay in a tent close to the bank of the river or rest for the night in one of the cabins.

Day 8: Kokchurang – Tshoka via Phedang. (6-7 hrs)

From Kockchurang we trek back to Tshoka via Phedang - the way we climbed upwards. We rest at Tshoka overnight.
